January 2016 meeting minutes

Kelly, President, opened the meeting and welcomed new visitors Amber and Lauren (member’s daughter).   She reminded the guild that it was time to pay dues of $60, to fill out a new membership form and that elections would be held during the meeting.

The Challenge/Swap committee handed out forms for a 2016 Challenge. Kim described the challenge and said that she wanted the group to decide what they would like to work on all year.  This includes projects to be finished or started, techniques to learn or brush up on and swaps to get involved in.  There will be prizes drawn for those working on this list throughout the year, so for example if you choose free motion quilting to work on, bring in your samples.

Kelly let the group know that the Paducah Quilt Museum is looking for auction items to raise money for the museum.  This could be a quilt or any supplies. Kelly has the information if you would like to contribute.

Lynn from the Program Committee gave an update on our guest instructor for 2016.  Latifah Saafir will be doing a class for the guild on Saturday June 18th at our normal meeting spot.  On Sunday June 19th a class will be given that is open to the public and this may be held at 5/8th Seams in West Ashley.  We need to decide what the classes will be, so start looking at her work to get ideas.
Community Service committee had no updates.

QuiltCon West is coming up in February.  Lynn and Phoebe will be going this year.  Lynn is taking two free motion quilt classes and Phoebe is taking two improv classes.

Cobblestone show is March 4th and 5th and several members have quilts in the show. Alice, Lynn, Geri and Phoebe will have quilts in the show and the two guild quilts made for QuiltCon last year are also to be in the show.

The guild made a going away quilt for Kelly, the outgoing President, made from Lizzy House fabric.

Elections of board were held and the results are as follows:
Lynn- President
Phoebe- Vice President
Jackie- Treasurer
Amy-Secretary

Show and Tell:
Susan Clark shared a wall hanging quilt she completed from a class she took - in purple, of course.

Carol announced that it was her one year anniversary with the guild and she shared a yoga mat she quilted called Cosmic Cogs done in applique.  She also did a mini quilt as a tribute to the late David Bowie.  Small quilt called, Bubbles the Mermaid was made using the pattern from the Chattanooga, TN quilt shop and finally she shared her blocks from the Project 48 quilt along.

Kim and Jackie shared their Project 48 blocks also.  (Picture below is of all Project 48 blocks brought to meeting by various members.)

Alice shared a project she learned at 5/8th seams using Persian Embroidery.  She made a quilt using selvedges from Cotton and Steel that Kim gave her from QuiltCon.

Gloria shared her City Sampler quilt using the Tula Pink pattern and Katie Jump Rope fabric by Denise Schmidt.

Sandy shared 5 Farmers Wife blocks that she has been working on and a throw quilt in blue and white using former member Whitner’s pattern.  She also shared a mini she made for Cathy using orange scraps.

Jennifer and Sandy shared their completed charity quilt.

Jennifer showed off a quilt she made with a cotton and steel jelly roll and several zipper pouches she made for a swap using leather for the first time.

Amy shared a mini she made with Elizabeth Hartman’s Owl pattern making it resemble a sugar skull for a swap and her blocks for the Project 48 quilt along.

Kelly showed her Meadow quilt which Lynn quilted for her and her completed Christmas Swoon quilt.

Lynn modeled a linen tunic made from a pattern in the Lotta Jansdotter book and a bag from a Grainline Studies pattern.  She and Geri also finished their charity quilt which she quilted with red thread for another pop of color.  Lynn also showed off a gorgeous improv quilt she used as a study to decide what color to paint her house!  Clever Lynn. . .

Phoebe shared with the group her Diane Von Furstenberg inspired quilt.

Kelly thanked everyone and closed her last meeting as president.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 23rd at 6.30pm.  Doors will open at 6pm.

A note from our 2016 Swaps and Challenges committee chair, Kim -
At our last guild meeting we didn’t really discuss a swap for February and since Valentines will have passed, let’s celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by exchange green fat quarters.  Bring 1-2 green fat quarters to the next meeting.  No, they do not have to be solid green, but need to read green from a distance.  Yes, they can have a little bit of another color, but the majority of your fabric should be green.  Ah, Irish eyes are shining.

We have started our first challenge for 2016 last month by getting members to fill out a 2016 Challenge Form.  If you haven’t turned yours in, get to it.  Access the form by clicking on the Documents link under our banner at the top of the page.  Our committee is challenging each member to work on a quilting skill that you want to improve during the year.  Bring what you have been working on since our last meeting for show & tell, and check in with me to give your credit.
