July 2013 Meeting Minutes

Business
There were 14 members in attendance.

Kelly B., Vice-President, opened the meeting and welcomed everyone.

In the upcoming months we will consider cancelling our November and December meetings (since they fall on holidays) and plan a social/casual get together.  Most of the members in attendance preferred to hold this get together on a weeknight instead of a weekend. We will decide if we want to so a Secret Santa exchange to celebrate the holidays with each other.

Name Tag Challenge:  Members will have until September to complete a name tag.  The guild will provide our guild logo on fabric for you to use (more info to come on this).  The tag can be any size or design.  It was recommended that you use LARGE print for your name-so members will be able to read it.  Those who complete their name tag at the September meeting will be eligible for a prize (TBD).

FAT QUARTER SWAP:  Please bring a fat quarter of modern fabric to swap at the August guild meeting.

We now have a Face Book page, friend/follow us:  www.facebook.com/charleston.modernquiltguild. You will continue to find the minutes from our meetings and other guild information on this website.  We will use our Face Book page for members to correspond with each other.

The New York City Metro Modern Quilt Guild has issued a Double Wedding Ring challenge to be completed by 12/1/13.  You can go on Pinterest to get ideas about double wedding ring quilts.  This is a link to their website for details:   http://www.nycmetromodquilters.com/dwr-challenge-2/

Tonight we received nine new members into our guild, and membership cards were passed out.  At this time we understand that Stitch and Sew (Mt. Pleasant) and Hancock Fabrics will give you a 10% discount for showing your card.

Kerri has a Grace Frame for hand quilting up for sale if anyone is interested please contact her.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, August 27 at 6:30pm at the SMHA offices at 400 Hibben Street.

Our Quilting Bee
Sarah was our recipient of 16 blocks this month.  We were asked to make a Mother’s Dream block using fabric provided by Sarah.  She is planning to make an ‘80s-themed quilt for her husband.  (2-3 additional blocks will be mailed).

Sarah's blocks

Jackie passed out packets of fabric to be used for Follow the Leader blocks.  The blocks will finish at 24 inches.  We received the background fabric (teal) and fabric for one set of flying geese.  Each of us will provide 3 additional fabrics for remaining flying geese.  Please bring completed block to the August meeting.

June 2013 Meeting Minutes

Business

We began with introductions. There were 11 members and 2 guests were in attendance. Welcome to Renate and Laurie—we hope to see you again!

The Charleston Modern Quilt Guild is officially joining the Modern Quilt Guild. Membership forms and copies of the by-laws were handed out at the June meeting. Dues for July–December ($30) and completed membership forms are due at the July meeting. If you need a copy of the form or by-laws, please email charlestonmodernquiltguild@gmail.com. Please make checks out to Charleston Modern Quilt Guild.

Phoebe attended a webinar sponsored by the Modern Quilt Guild in June regarding finances and record keeping for the guild. Please ask her if you have any questions about what she learned.

Tamie told us about an online Quilt-Along that's just starting to make the "Swoon" pattern by Camille Roskelley. Here's the link for more info about the Swoon-Along.

Geri donated two of her long arm practice quilts to the quild to donate to a worthy cause. Phoebe will look into getting Spoonflower fabric printed with our logo to be labels for charity quilts.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, July 23 at 6:30pm at the SMHA offices at 400 Hibben Street.

Our Quilting Bee

June was Karen's month in our bee rotation. Karen asked for 8.5" unfinished blocks, all black and white fabrics, with no appliqué and no 2.5" squares. Eight blocks (shown below) were turned in and they are gorgeous! Hope you enjoy them, Karen!

Our traveling member, Sarah, has next month. She handed out kits of fabric with instructions when she was in town in May. If you took a kit, please bring the completed block to the July meeting.

Program

Phoebe gave a presentation on social media to help everyone learn about how to use the many social media platforms, specifically in regards to quilting and the quilt community. Below are a few notes from the presentation:

  • an online diary featuring photos, personal and professional information, stories and tutorials
  • great for gathering fabric ideas, patterns, quilt inspiration
  • frequently host interactive events, like quilt-alongs, that you can participate in from home
  • make online friends around the world
  • warning: blogs are a "time vampire" (Phoebe H.)
  • Member blogs: Phoebe's—pixiecupindustries.blogspot.com; Kelly's—stitchyquiltstuff.blogspot.com; Kim and Jackie—quirkyquiltssc.blogspot.com
Facebook:
  • Look for your favorite designers, personal friends, etc.
  • You do not have to join Facebook to see some professional or business pages
Pinterest:
  • Online "bulletin boards"; "pin" things to your boards from the internet rather than bookmarking
  • Make boards for any specific interest (fabric, knit, quilts, patterns, haircuts, etc.)
  • Make secret boards no one else can see
  • Click through on photo to go back to original website
  • Make sure to "pin" from the specific post (click the post header and then pin the photo)
  • Follow people you like to see what they pin
Flickr:
  • Online photo sharing (albums)
  • Upload your photos
  • Follow people you like to see their photos
  • Look for groups to join; many online swaps and bees are formed through Flickr
Twitter:
  • Used for short (characters are limited) status updates
  • Use hashtags (#) to sort/categorize your tweet
Instagram:
