March 25 meeting minutes

Business

There were 15 members in attendance and one visitor.  Welcome Robbin.

Phoebe, President, opened the meeting and welcomed everyone.

Our guest Robbin Golden gave us additional information about making quilts for the Royal Family Kids Camp, a camp for foster kids ages 7-1.  Quilts should be throw size 50” x 60”.  Gender neutral works, since they will not know the number of boys or girls attending this summer in June.  Robbin thanked us for helping to make these quilts because in the past she made them by herself.

Becky is in the need for scraps of solids/batiks/tone on tone any size to use in abstract landscapes.  She will donate $5 per scrap bag, up to a $100 donation towards the guild Charity projects for the upcoming year.

Program

Phoebe and Geri have been talking about us making a group quilt to enter into QuiltCon 2015.  Our program tonight was to brainstorm about what to make.  After much discussion, we decided to make a Charleston based group quilt using pictures and words:

If you think of anything else related to Charleston let’s add it to the list.  Members at the meeting picked blocks and we left some for those who could make it tonight.  Let us know which blocks you want and we will update our list.  Phoebe will look into Kona Cotton fabric for us; we decided to use our guild colors with the addition of greens.  There will be a more detailed email concerning the fabric.   Deadline to finish the block will be May 17, 2014 (Sew Day).

Swaps:  We started our Modern Block of the Month.  We completed 19 blocks of Modern Movement Block by Letty at Happy Dance Quilting. We are expecting a few more and might have enough to make 2 quilts for our Charity project.

Our next sew day will be April 12.  PLEASE NOTE:  This is a change as Easter weekend is the 3rd weekend of the month.  The change has also been announced on Facebook.

Thank you to Linda for donating 25 yards of batting she purchased at Tuesday Morning last fall.  We'll be putting this to good use in many many charity quilts to come!

Show & Tell

·       Whitner - a newly finished baby quilt for a friend and quilted by Geri

·       Kim - Books:  Vintage Quilt Revival, by Katie Clark Blakesley, Lee Heinrich, & Faith Jones, and the Missouri Star Quilt Co. Block magazine.

·       Becky- 2 quilts.  The first quilt was inspired by a Yoshiko Jenzenji pattern.  The second is our first donation for Royal Family Kids Camp!  Thanks Becky!

·       Juanita - a quilt she made from fabrics purchased on a road trip
·      Keri - Hexagon project in progress

·       Lynn - two quilts.  The design of the first quilt shown below was laid out by her sons!  Future quilters or artists maybe?  Talented boys!

·       Tamie- scrap bucket on right, zipper pouch & embroidery class sample

·       Phoebe - rainbow scrap bucket (above) & a machine cover for her Singer Featherweight, lovingly named Cora

We had a great show and tell.  Thanks to all who contributed and make sure to bring new items next month.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 6:30pm at the Heritage Trust Bank at 847 Coleman Blvd.
