May 2013 meeting minutes

Welcome to Susan Clark who visited our group.

New Business:
Phoebe explained that in July we will be joining the Modern Quilt Guild and officially becoming a chapter of the main MQG.  By joining the main guild we would be able to take advantage of their 501c3 status, have use of their CRM software, plan events and have an online RSVP system, and have a social media hub to share pictures and communicate with other chapter MQGs.  Also, our members would receive priority registration and discounts for MQG events as well as other discounts and benefits. The Charleston Modern Quilt Guild will need to pay dues to the main guild which will be based on the number of members we have on our roll.

An executive board which will serve until January 2015 was established and has written by-laws.  The officers are:
Phoebe Harrell - President
Kelly Biscopink - Vice President
Tamie Herin - Treasurer
Kim McPeake - Secretary
Kelly Martin - Member at Large

Our fiscal year will begin in January.  Dues will be $60 per year, but prorated to $30 for those joining after July 1.  Accordingly, our starting dues for 2103 will be $30.

Formalized membership packets will come out in July.  We are still planning the budget, which will include membership costs to the Modern Quilt Guild, insurance, accounting, sewing days, etc.  The by-laws were emailed this week to all for review.  Discussion of questions or concerns will occur at the June meeting.  Dues and membership forms will be collected at the July meeting.  Each member will be required to choose a committee to join.  Committee ideas:  education, programs, community outreach, etc.  If you think of anything else contact/email Phoebe.

Sandy announced the AlabamaChanin workshop/trunk show presented by Good Business Forum on June 20, 2013.

Reminder about the following challenges:
Northern Ohio Modern Quilt Guild Art Spark Challenge.  This group has issued a challenge to make a quilt inspired by a piece of art at a museum.

People, Place and Quilts has issued us a challenge using the current Modern Block of the Month program at the shop.  You would make the 12 blocks starting now until July.  The quilt will be finished in any way the maker sees fit, quilted and turned in by October.  It will be judged, prizes are:  $100, $75, $50.  Guild members will receive a 20% discount on the kit; cost will be $48 plus tax.

Community Outreach:
We made pillowcases and quilts for Moore , Oklahoma.  We had a short discussion about creating a signature quilt block for us to use in the future for our give away quilts.

Block Swap:
Linda received 15 LOVE  blocks tonight.  Karen King has asked us to make any kind of pieced blocks 8 ½ inch unfinished.  She does not want any 2 ½” squares.  The blocks can be any pieced pattern, but she asks for applique.   Sarah is visiting us from Alabama and she is the June block swap, but brought her fabric and pattern to us tonight.  Next month you only need to turn in Karen’s black/white blocks.  Turn in Sarah’s blocks in July.  We will receive a packet from Jackie in July.
