Charleston Modern Quilt Guild Meeting
July 24, 2012
In attendance: Tamie,
Gerri, Alice, Pat Perry (new), Rita, Jane, Sandy, and Kim
Tamie started our meeting by sharing information about Quilt
Con, the MQG conference in Austin, TX February 21-24, 2013. Updated information with changes to the
conference schedule and an additional hotel has been added. We passed around a copy of the schedule/class
descriptions. Please go online to see
changes. www.quiltcon.com At this time the following are attending Quilt Con: Alice, Tamie, Phoebe, Jane, Sandy, Kelly and Kim. Registration opens August 30, 2012.
We talked about our upcoming Block Swap: The idea is for each participates to select a
block for their quilt. Each of us will
be assigned a month with drawing our names.
During your month you will pass out instructions for the block you want
made by the group. You can make a e fabric
kit for each of us with all of the fabric, some of the fabric, just the
background fabric, or ask members to use their stash. If you are asking us to use our stash, you
could request the color combination. We
passed around Susanne Woods' book “Modern Blocks” to show some example blocks
and “Block Party: The Modern Quilting Bee”, by Alissa Haight Carlton and KristenLejnieks. The last book is about an
internet group which had a block swap.
We will draw names at the August meeting. If you cannot attend and want to be a part of
the swap, please email Phoebe using the email listed in the "About Us" section at the top of this page so that your name will be in the drawing.
A discussion as to what we expect of our local MQG:
· Rita: We
don’t need speakers since so much is online.
But bring in websites to share with others. Plan Group Projects-where a pattern is
provided, but each of us makes our own quilt.
· Tamie:
Maybe share teachers with the Beaufort guild or just plan to go to Quilt
Con each year for instructions.
·
Alice:
Loved last month’s meeting, because each member brought 3 things to
share with the group.
·
Gerri:
Charity Quilts/Pillows/Placemats:
Red Cross, Hospitals, Meals on Wheels, etc.
· Talked about having “Sew Days”: can be a demo of a new technique, bring your
own projects, share knowledge, collaborate, pick a pattern (The Swoon Pattern
or the Crazy 9-patch was an example) for all of us to make for our own, etc.
· Places to for “Sew Days”: All Saints Church, Berkley Electric on Johns
Island, and the Bees Ferry Rec Center (in Grand Oaks Subdivision). Maybe a retreat at Camp St. Christopher on
Seabrook Island.
We then had show and tell:
Gerri made 2 quilts for the grandchildren (pictures to follow)
Rita made a sew as your go Super Hero quilt for her grandson
Jane made a Crazy 9-patch quilt and we helped pick out
borders and binding. Also show a take 5
pattern quilt, but made it scrappy, and a half-triangle square quilt.
(pictures to follow)
Alice is using the book, “Word Play”. She is piecing words with fabric using the
Boy Scout Law.
Sandy shared a skirt which she made today during a class at
5/8” Seams West Ashley store and share her “Generation Q” magazine-summer
edition.
Our next meeting will be August 28th at 6:30 pm. Remember, we will draw names for the Block Swap. If you will not be at this meeting and want
to participate email Phoebe to add your name to the list by Monday, August
27.
I am interested in attending a meeting. Please let me know when and where your next meeting will be for the next couple of months. I live in Lexington, SC and there seems to be interest in starting a MQG here.
