Charleston Modern Quilt Guild
March 24, 2020

Business – Connie opened our first virtual meeting at 6:30pm on ZOOM with 21 members.

Committee Reports
Charity –  On Wednesday March 11 CMQG members Susan B.,  Kathy,  Kerry,  Angie,  Hope and Casey helped residents of Florence Crittenton with sewing keychain chapstick holders.  The residents had fun and had a chance to make holders for themselves and friends.  The next scheduled event is May 16 but stay tuned for updates.

Swaps and Challenges – Connie presented the CMQG 2020 Modern Challenge.
Architectural Inspiration.
Choose an inspiration image of a created physical element. Could be a building; a stained-glass window; a tile floor pattern; a beehive; the interior of an ant hill; the corner of a room; the vein structure of a leaf; window blinds; etc. Literally ANYTHING built, and not just by humans. Some of the most amazing built items in the world are created by nature.
Challenge.
Create a MODERN quilt based on your chosen image. The interpretation should not be literal. Please do not take your image and make an exact replica of it. Explore different elements:
·      Color
·      Shape
·      Line
·      Texture
·      Shadow
·      Space / Void

Constraints.
1.   No side smaller than 18”.
2.   Styling: Modern.
3.   No limitations on colors or techniques (improv, applique, curves, etc.)
4.   Must include a copy of the inspiration image with your finished quilt.
5.   I highly, highly, HIGHLY encourage you to create your own design, but if you must use a pattern, please include the design source.
Timing.
Start...now!
Finish: October 27th CMQG Meeting
With our physical separations, please use social media to explore ideas and keep us updated with your progress! Instagram is so great for that. Please use #chsmqg2020challenge so we can find your work!
The next couple of pages are sample quilts to inspire. Please reach out to Whitner Kane at whitnerkane@gmail.com with any questions. Happy stitching!

Budget – Lynn B. presented the Budget for 2020.  Our income will be from dues and the Timna Tarr class and lecture.  Expenses will be for Committee Activities and Timna Tarr Class.  A Scholarship Fund is being established for members to access when they may need a bit of help participating in guild events.  Members can donate directly or drop off donations in the Scholarship bucket at the Welcome desk when signing in for guild meetings. Contact Lynn B. if you or someone you know needs a bit a help.
Special Events – Due to the concerns of COVID19,  the Special Exhibit at The Station Park Place for March was cancelled. The Exhibit, along with a Sip and Shop, will hopefully be rescheduled in the summer. Contact Kim if you would like to pick up your quilt,  she has offered to keep the quilts until the event is rescheduled.
Timna Tarr – October 9-11, 2020.  We have 16 members signed up for the Oct. 9 lecture (free) and 15 for the Oct. 10-11 two day class ($225 includes lunch both days).  All events will take place at the clubhouse at Hobcaw Creek Plantation off Longpoint Rd. in Mt. Pleasant.  Money needs to be received before you will be officially registered for the class.  Since we are not meeting in person please drop a check in the mail made out to CMQG,  P.O. Box 723,  Sullivan’s Island,  SC 29482.  The class will be opened up to the public in April and a waiting list will also be kept.
Tara Faughnan – Mark your calendars!  Plans are underway for Tara Faughnan to visit us on October 8-10,  2021.  Special thanks to Phoebe for making this possible!  Check out Tara’s Instagram page and her website to see her work and possible class offerings. Detail as we get closer to 2021.
Masks - As our community faces the challenges from COVID-19 there are many people who are making cloth masks for health care workers,  first responders and others.  Several patterns are available on YouTube and online and we encourage anyone who would like to help out to be sure to identify a group,  individual or location that will be accepting homemade masks.  Here are two links that can help.
1.    Deaconess searchable database for where to donate sewn mask  https://www.deaconess.com/How-to-make-a-Face-Mask/Mask-Donations?all=true
