March 2017 meeting minutes

Our president, Lynn, opened the meeting and welcomed guests and two new members, Peggy and Luann.  Phoebe brought cupcakes to celebrate the guild's fifth birthday!!  She also thanked everyone for coming and for helping to keep this guild thriving and growing.

At our March sew day, Lynn walked us through how to make a Market Bag by Anna Graham of Noodlehead.   We had lots of fun!!

Sew day for April has been cancelled as it is planned for the Saturday before Easter.

PROGRAMS COMMITTEE -
Geri's goal is to have a brief technique demo at every meeting.  Please let her know if you have something you'd like to share with the group.

Mark your calendars!  Victoria Findlay Wolfe is coming October 19-21, 2018!  She'll be lecturing on Friday, October 19th and classes will be scheduled Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21. Details to follow.

CHARITY COMMITTEE -
Sandy will update with detailed plans at the April meeting.

SWAPS AND CHALLENGES COMMITTEE -
Participants in the March challenge brought back the box, bag or bowl that they made for their swap partner.  Lots of great items were received.  Thanks to all who participated!

Our April challenge is to bring a 12.5" (or 12" finished) block in any pattern using only black and white fabrics.  No other colors or grey are to be used but black and white prints are acceptable. Please bring these blocks to the April meeting where they will be collected and assembled into a charity quilt.

Alice gave a brief talk and show and tell on the two classes she took at QuiltCon in Savannah.  The first was a handwork class with Heidi Parkes that featured Korean techniques of applique, hand sewing binding and hand piecing.  She showed us a sample that she started in class.
Alice also took an improvisational handwork class from Chawne Kimber.  Chawne gave tips on how to make stitches look the same on the front and back of a handquilted piece and demonstrated many different stitch patterns.  Here's the stitch sampler she finished into a mini quilt.

SHOW AND TELL -

Lynn made these adorable zip up tray pouch and project caddy pieces from patterns by Aneela Hoey.

Phoebe finished a cross stitched unicorn piece into a hand quilted mini.  She also used scraps from two other quilts to make a mini quilt.  She brought in a finished Molehills quilt that she made last year from a class taught by Latifah Saafir and a long term WIP churn dash quilt made out of Essex linen and her favorite all time fabric line, Habitat by Jay McCarroll.  Love the backs of those quilts too!!  Nice work, Phoebe!

Cheryl brought two baby quilts she made for coworkers.
Karen showed off a handmade doll she bought from an artist.  The doll wears a quilted gown.
Cathy brought a foundation paper pieced compass star quilt.
Connie made two pillows covers with hexagons inspired by work done by Nicole Daksiewicz of Modern Handcraft.
Peggy made a mini quilt featuring snowmen with a cute bells and beads border.
Pam shared a beautiful wall hanging that she made as part of the Palmetto Fiber Arts Guild.

Alice made this adorable whole cloth quilt and stuffies from a panel by Sarah Watts.  What a lucky grandson she has!!
Kelly broke all of our hearts by bringing in this amazing rainbow City Sampler quilt.  Pattern by Tula Pink.  Rainbow goodness fabrics by Carolyn Friedlander.  Love this quilt.
Sandy and Jennifer took a tunic class at Five Eighth Seams and Sandy brought her lovely voile tunic in to share.

Next meeting is Tuesday, April 25th.  Don't forget to bring your name tags, challenge blocks and show and tell.  See you there!
