February 2019 meeting notes

Business
We had 23 members and 3 visitors.

Jenifer opened the meeting and Phoebe shared highlights from QuiltCon held in Nashville Feb. 21-24,  2019.  She is providing Whitner with a link to quilt pictures and their identifying cards that will be shared with the group.  Our Charity Quilt ‘Don’t Put Baby in A Corner’ was among those hanging at the convention center and several members had their photos taken with it.

Program Planning – Charlene and Bev
A Program Survey was handed out listing 15 possible topics for selection and comments and collected at the end of the meeting.

Bev introduced classes offered by the Charleston Cobblestone Quilt Guild invited speakers that are available for sign up for any interested members.  Each class offers the opportunity to learn and perfect different techniques.  Currently there are four classes scheduled for 2019.

The March Sew Day (Sat.  March 16 at 9:30am at Five Eighth Seams) will feature Phoebe offering a paper piecing project.  The project will be beginner friendly and the will teach how to combine two separate paper pieced blocks.  The important tool necessary for the technique is the ‘Add a Quarter Ruler’  which will be available at Wild and Woolly.  Whitner will send out an email to get a head count before the sew day.

Charity Planning  - Connie
Connie handed out information about the charity projects for 2019.  We will continue to visit Florence Crittenton and provide dinner and a project for the girls every other month.  Connie and  Karyn will be going on March 8.  Currently May 8, July 10,  September 11  and November 13 are available for sign ups. A copy of the handout was included in Whitner’s email (2/27/19).

There are several other ideas for charity projects this year.  However since we are looking toward the AQS Challenge (see below) and potential for making a charity quilt for QuiltCon 2020 in the fall decisions on how to proceed will take place later in the year.  The April Sew Day will include the opportunity to make crate blankets for SPCA.

Special Guest – Debbie – owner of Wild and Woolly
Debbie is open for business with quilting and knitting supplies.  She is excited and encouraged by the warm welcome she has received and is looking forward to growing the store with input from quilters in the area.  She has located a source for Essex Linen so let her know if you have any special favorites!  Sunday Sew-In with Linda will continue and hand-sewers are welcome to join in the Knit Nights as well.

Challenges and Swaps  - Gloria and Kim
Kim and Gloria presented the challenge for 2019 – the guild will make and submit 25-30 TWO COLOR quilts to the American Quilter’s Society (AQS) for consideration as an exhibit for the AQS Show in Charleston in 2020. A copy of the handout was sent out in Whitner’s email (2/27/19).

Guild members brought in thirty house blocks for House Block Challenge for the Humble Quilts Campfire charity collection for those who have suffered loss during the fires.  Cathy will send these off to California this week.

Programs – Lynn
Lynn has been in contact with Sherri Lynn Wood to present a lecture and class for the guild on May 17-19,  2019. It was agreed that the guild would request a two day class.  Details will follow as they become available.

Show and Tell
Alice made an adorable Valentine's Day quilt.  She's also been busy making lots of cute shopping bags.
Our newest prolific member Rick keeps cranking out those quilts and shared this one made in Clemson fabrics.
Cathy brought in a gorgeous wedding ring quilt and an original paper pieced block that she designed.

Door prize from QuiltCon went to Gloria and Phoebe was the lucky recipient of ‘Don’t Put Baby in a Corner’ Pillow designed by Kim and made out of leftover blocks from our charity challenge quilt.

Next meeting - Tuesday March 26, 2019 at 6:30pm.  Meetings are held at the Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union at 847 Coleman Blvd, Mt Pleasant.  Doors open at 6pm.
