May 2014 Meeting Minutes

Business
There were 18 members and 2 visitors in attendance.  Welcome to Robin and Carol!

Triangle Modern QuiltGuild has invited members to their retreat in November at Wilmington Beach.  Click here for more information (once the link opens, click "File" and "Download" to open the flyer.)

The Modern Quilt Guild has announced a contest to design a pattern/quilt for 2015 Quilt Con. More details here.

Amy shared news about swap that May Chappell is hosting called "All Shirts, No Shoes 2.0." You can find the pattern by Carolyn Friedlander here. Many local and online shops carry the pattern, or you can order the pattern from Carolyn directly by emailing her at carolynfriedlander dot com.

Our Charleston Group Quilt Blocks are due at the July meeting. It was decided that we could use embroidery on our blocks, but no beads or painting.  Also, keep the final quilting in mind when you design your block; we don't want to make things difficult for our quilter!  Please refer to the April minutes for more information about fabric choices. Several members have finished their blocks and brought them in for Show & Tell:

We have MQG pins for our new members. If you haven't received one yet, please see Kim at the next meeting.

Committee Reports
Membership/Space: Information postcards are finished.

Programs: Looking forward to our freemotion quilting class in a few months. Other programs to come.

Special Events: A behind-the-scenes tour at the Charleston Museum is being set up.  The date has not been set, but the cost will be $20 per person.

Swaps & Challenges: We are still working on quilts using blocks from the Modern Block of the Month we did earlier this year for our charity project. In July we will use www.elfster.com to draw names for a handmade gift swap during our Christmas party.  We can use Elfster to communicate anonymously with our secret partner so we can get to know them better.

Community Service: There will be a trunk show of all of the quilts turned in for the Royal Family Kids Camp at the June 12, 2014 Cobblestone Quilt Guild’s meeting.  Robin needs completed quilts by June 17, 2014.

Program
We played Quilt Trivia in groups of three. Our winners were Tamie, Geri & Keri.

Our next sew day will be May 17, 9 am-3 pm at the Heritage Trust Bank building (847 Coleman Blvd.)  Bring a project, lunch and drinks. Don’t forget your sewing machine power cord, extension cords, cutting mat, rotary cutter, project supplies, and ironing board/iron.

Show & Tell

Phoebe, President, opened the meeting and welcomed everyone.

News from  Modern Quilt Guild:

v  Michael Miller Challenge  Fabric has been distributed (6 fat eights).  The deadline has been changed to July 25, 2014.  As usual, participants can add fabrics to what they were given but only other Michael Miller fabrics or solids.
v  QuiltCon class information will be available on June 1, 2014
v  QuiltCon registration will be June 24, 2014.  Members will be able to register early by using a password code which will be sent to us.  QuiltCon will be in Austin, Texas on February 19-22, 2015.  Members are encouraged to go as this is a great opportunity to meet other modern quilters.  And the classes, lectures and shopping are wonderful.

Business:
A motion was made by Linda and seconded by Becky to approve the 2014 Budget.  All of the membership in attendance approved.
Each committee chair reported back about the events and ideas for the remainder of the year.  It was decided that each month we will ask each committee chair to give us a report, so that we can keep up to date with everything going on.
Membership/Space
Delynne-Chair, Becky & Kim
Each member should have a directory of addresses/phone numbers and you are asked to verify your information.  We are in the process of producing a postcard with the guild’s information on it for quilt shops, shows, etc.
Community Service
Sandy-Chair, Tamie, Geri, Linda & Pat
We contributed items to the My Sister’s House silent auction held during the Cobblestone Quilt Show in February/March 2014.  At this time we will have 15 quilts to donate to the Royal Family Kids Camp, a camp for foster kids ages 7-1.  Quilts should be throw size 50” x 60”.  Gender neutral works, since they will not know the number of boys or girls attending this summer in June.  We can discuss if we want to take the fourth quarter off or if there is a charity during the holidays that we want to do something for let us know.
Programs
Whitner-Chair, Kelly B, Cathy, Juanita and Amy.
No one from this committee was in attendance at the meeting.
Special Events
Keri-Chair, Jackie, Susan, Lana, Ruth & Jenifer
The events committee is working with the Charleston Museum for a behind the scene tour.  In July we will begin to talk about our Christmas party, which this committee and the Swaps committee will be coordinating.  There was some talk about the upcoming AQS Quilt Shows in Charlotte NC (7/30/14-8/2/14) and in Chattanooga TN (9/10/14-9/13/14).
Swaps & Challenges
Lynn-Chair, Alice, Ruth, Ginny & Phoebe
Right now this group is busy with the Michael Miller Challenge issued by the National MQG.   We explained the Charleston Group Quilt to our new members and had additional sign ups to make blocks.
Charleston Group Quilt
We are in the midst of making a group quilt with Charleston as the theme.  Blocks can be pictures or the words with a modern flair.  You are asked to use Kona Cotton solids by Robert Kaufman.  You can use any color, but we are trying to keep our backgrounds or use of white to Kona Snow.   (This is the name of the fabric/color, do not use a bolt that says White).  The colors from our logo in Kona are:  School Bus, Blue, Water, Cadet, and Medium Grey.  Sizes for blocks square or rectangles six to twenty inches.  Deadline for blocks will be the July guild meeting (7/27/14).
