April 2019 meeting minutes

Business

We had 24 members and 5 visitors.  Four visitors joined!

Whitner opened the meeting at 6:30pm.  Sherri Lynn Wood will be coming to Mount Pleasant May 17-19,  2019.  Lecture on May 17th is free to members and $10 for visitors.  Please RSVP if you plan to attend the Friday night demo/lecture at 6:30pm.  There is a sign-up for providing appetizers for Friday night.   There are currently two openings for the class being held May 18 - 19.  A catered lunch will be available each day.

Charity

Connie collected many sewn pet blankets for the Charleston Animal Shelter.  She also remind us about the Sew –In for the women at Florence Crittenton House on Wednesday May 8, 2019 starting at 5:30pm.  Hope will be heading up the evening’s project to sew burp cloths from the kits provided by Kim.  Contact Hope if you are interested in helping.  The project for July will be Zippered Toiletry Bags and members can make up and bring kits to the May and June meetings. 

The kits should include: 

A 14" or longer nylon zipper (no metal)
One piece of fabric 14" by 21" for the exterior
One piece of fabric 14" by 21" for the inside of bag
14" by 21" piece of fusible batting
6.5 x 3" scrap fabric  

Members voted to offer the CMQG 2019 and 2018 QuiltCon Charity Quilts to Florence Crittenton House for their Auction,  setting a minimum donation amount.  Amy will contact the director about the plans for their auction.

Program

Alice A. taught Big Stitch hand quilting. We practiced the technique on quilt sandwiches brought from home or provided by  Bev.  Alice recommends hand basting and using a quilt hoop to keep tension on the fabric and to allow you to rock the needle through the fabric several times.  Big Stitch stitches can be any size you want but often are ¼ inch using heavy weight thread (12 or 8 wt).  Alice recommends YLI thread.

Phoebe taught Sashiko stitching.  In Japanese Sashiko means ‘little stabs’ and it was a running stitch used to repair worn fabrics in garments and other household textiles to extend their life. Phoebe had several examples of fabrics that had preprinted patterns on the fabric to guide stitching. Sashiko uses a thicker thread and it is similar to Kantha stitching practiced in India to bind several layers of thinner fabric. 

Susan brought her Brother Sashiko machine.  She had several quilted samples to show how domestic machines can be used to quilt patterns inspired by Sashiko.  She also demonstrated stitching with the Sashiko machine which allows you to adjust the stitch length and the space between the stitches. 

Final Notes

Kim reminded everyone of the AQS Challenge with quilts due on Aug. 28, 2019.  #chsmqgtwocolorchallenge features finished quilts and selected color combinations from members.

Show and Tell

 Alice is the first person to bring in a finished two color challenge quilt!!

 Alice shared this cute Oreo zipper bag she made, but didn't bother to share any of the cookies...

Bev shared a travel quilt she made for her mother.  She's going to mark each city to which her mother has visited as a remembrance of her travels.

New member Vicki shared a cowboy quilt made as a sample for her booth at an upcoming show.

 Rick finished shams to go with the Charleston quilt he brought in last month.

 Charlene made these cutie Easter baskets for her grandchildren.

 She also shared a springy baby quilt she recently finished.

 Amy and Kim did a block swap and made these quilts using an Art Gallery collection.

 Amy also brought in a quilt top that she finished as part of the thencamejune Meadowland quiltalong.

 She rounded out her show and tell by sharing this gorgeous Single Girl quilt from a pattern by Denyse Schmidt.

 Irene has an unbelievable amount of determination to finish all 324 tiny blocks she needed for this quilt top.

 Hope made another sweet quilt for a wedding gift.

 She also brought in her quilt top for the two color challenge.

 Hope shared this quilt that was part of the QuiltCon 2019 show and will be part of our two color challenge.

 She also finished this paper pieced back for the tshirt quilt she made for her son.  

Last but not least, she brought in her curved mini quilt that was featured in the latest Curated Quilts magazine!

Our next meeting CMQG is May 28, 2019 at 6.30pm.  Doors open at the Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union at 847 Coleman Blvd in Mount Pleasant at 6pm.
