Minutes for the CMQG Meeting on October 27, 2015

In attendance: Linda, Gloria, Jenifer, Debbie, Delyn, Lynn C., Lynn B., Tami, Kim, Alice, Keri, Sandy, Amy, Phoebe, Cathy, Kelly

Kelly, president, started the meeting and asked the guests to introduce themselves.  There were two guests that came with other members, the first was Leigh a local milliner and clothing designer and Sarah a quilter. 

Kelly announced that due to Thanksgiving, that the next meeting would be help early on November 10^th.  There are no swaps scheduled for the next meeting.  Also there will be no sew day in November. 

The group was reminded that officers for next year need to be considered and that nominations would be made next month.  Voting will take place in January and the new officers will start in February.  All officers are in their first year, so they can serve one more term or they can be someone new.  Kelly announced that due to her work commitments, she could not serve as president again next year.

• Charity Committee- Phoebe gave an update of the AME quilts for Mother Emanuel and told that all seven quilts were complete.  We will deliver these to the church during a service and that date is to be determined.  Stitch magazine did an article on the quilts and that will be on the newsstands in the winter issue- November. 
• Swap Committee- A color themed fat quarter swap took place.  At the previous meeting member names were drawn along with their color choice. 
• Holiday Party- The holiday party will be held on December 12^th.  Don’t forget to work on your swap for your partner.
• Programming Committee- Latiffa Safir (www.latifahsaafirstudios.com) will do a workshop with the guild in 2016.  The group thought October would be a good time for this, so Lynn will get in touch with her to try to plan that.

Program: Delyn did a needle turn applique demonstration- see attached handout if you missed the meeting.

She discussed using fusible and said that she does not prefer this method because she worries about the longevity in her quilts.  This also gives a very flat look and she prefers the puffiness that needle turn gives the applique.  She uses a very fine thread such as a 50 wt. or silk.  She uses freezer paper, full page labels or wash away applique sheets (Walmart has a good price for the wash away).  If using glue, she uses Roxanne with a needle nose applicator.  Once she has drawn around the pattern she removes it and she starches the fabric ahead of time.  She does not recommend cutting out the background.

Here are some examples of her needle turn applique:

Tip from Lynn on free motion quilting planning.  She gets an 18 x 22 piece of Plexiglas and puts blue painters tape around the edges.  You put this on top of your quilt and draw possible quilting lines with wet erase markers (Vis a Vis).

Show and Tell:

Phoebe shared a wreath mini she made for a gift and a heart quilt made with Tula Pink fabric from a Tula Pink pattern for her mother’s birthday.  Phoebe also made a tote bag using indigo dyed fabric from a recent workshop and added a Shasiko panel.  She shared a mini that was made for her by another quilter from Instagram @smakka.  Phoebe submitted a school photo and a block was made in her likeness.  Phoebe finished the block by adding a “frame” and quilting it. 

Lynn shared her Halloween table topper and napkins she made as well as a throw made with Anna Maria Horner’s luminous fabric.  She also shared her completed Meadow Quilt from the Lizzy House workshop.

Leigh, our guest, shared a scrap piece she was working on and told the group that she is doing a large, scrap fabric installation at the Columbia museum of the state flag, using indigo scraps from the clothing she makes.

Cathy shared a flying geese quilt she made.

Debbie brought her Meadow quilt from the Lizzy House workshop also. 

Alice showed off her improve Princess and Pea quilt and her Swoon Christmas Quilt.

Sandy shared her churn dash baby quilt.

Keri told the group about a quilt along she is doing with Gnomeangel.  They are doing the Farmer’s Wife quilt and there are over 5000 people working on this.  The stores ran out of the book, so there is now an eBook due to the great demand.

Gloria showed off her City Sampler quilt made with Tula Pinks book and she made it using Katie Jump Rope fabric by Dennis Schmidt.

Minutes for the CMQG Meeting on September 22, 2015

In attendance:

Sandy open meeting to business:

·       Our President Kelly was absent tonight due to work commitments.

·       October 17, 2015 we will be meeting at the Farmer’s Market at Marion Square-downtown Charleston for a picnic/show & tell of our quilts on the lawn.  Geri’s daughter may come to do photographs for us.

·       JK Modern Quilt camp will be August 5-7, 2016 at Camp St. Christopher.  Please contact Kim or Jackie if you are interested in attending.

·       At our October 27^th guild meeting our program will be Quilt Labels with Amy and Delynne will teach us Needleturn Applique

·       Due to upcoming holidays our November meeting will be on 11/10/15 and our December meeting will be our holiday party (date to come).

·       It is time to be thinking about our 2016 Officers/Board for the upcoming year.  If you are interested in serving please contact Kelly or Sandy to let them know of your intentions.  We are only as good as our membership participation.

Reminders:

The Cobblestone Quilters Guild Quilt Show will be March 4 & 5, 2016.  Application to enter quilts is in January.

Phoebe reminded us that the deadline to enter Quilt Con West is November 30, 2015.  Two of the Mother Emanuel AME quilts are done and 4 are in the process.

Swaps/Challenges:

We had 7 ladies participating in our Rainbow Charm Square Challenge and Sandy won the challenge prize.  Tonight we drew names to bring fat quarters next month to that person in their favorite color.

Minutes from August 25, 2015

The meeting was called to order at 6:30pm.

Lizzy House:

Lynn announced that there were still Lizzy House spots open for each of the workshops, Friday and Saturday at Lance Hall and Sunday at the Guild meeting location.  She said that she would like help with entertaining Lizzy while she was in town.  Phoebe will figure out what she wants to do and have some of the guild help.

Logistics:  Start at 9 am, so please arrive at 8:30 to unload etc.  Lunch will be from Verde, so please bring cash- around $10.

Guests:

One guest, Ann, was in attendance and two guests from the past meetings joined the guild, Marybeth and Lynn.

Emanuel Quilts:

Phoebe, Amy and Geri went to Mother Emanuel to tell them about the quilts.  The church was very appreciative and asked the group to come to a service and present the quilts.  There were enough blocks for 6 quilts.  Geri and Lynn are quilting 4 of them and we still need volunteers for binding- Kim, Alice, Sandy and Debbie volunteered. 

Kelly thanked Phoebe for heading up this great project.

Quilt Camp:

Kelly and the guild thanked Kim and Jackie for the JK Modern Quilt Camp.  Everyone had an amazing time.  They said that they are already planning for next year!

Programming:

Latifah, aka The Quilting Engineer, will be doing a workshop for the guild next year.  We were able to get this at a discounted rate through her Kickstarter program to get her line off the ground.  Here is a link to her, so you can see her projects. http://www.latifahsaafirstudios.com/

Workshop

Sew Day- September 19^th:

Lynn will teach the Sailor Top by Fancy Tiger if enough people are interested.  You will need to get the pattern before class.  Please sign up so she knows how many people will attend. (NOTE: There was not enough interest, so it will probably be a regular open sew day.)

Swaps and Challenges:

Next month bring in your finished rainbow challenge item.  Everyone who participates will be entered into a drawing.  We played bingo for a fat quarter giveaway and Lynn, one of our new members won.

Show and Tell:

Phoebe showed her In Color Order drawstring bag, pattern by Jeni Baker.  She made it with Roller Skate fabric.  There is a free pattern on her blog (http://www.incolororder.com/2011/10/lined-drawstring-bag-tutorial.html), but you can also purchase the pattern which has more options.   She also shared a King size quilt that she made with Jay McCaroll's Habitat fabric using the churn dash block. 

Sandy shared her fish from one of the row by row patterns. She got it from the Quilted Corner in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Alice made a drawstring bag out of Elizabeth by Tula Pink.   

 She also made a mini quilt using the turtle she put in the group quilt for Quiltcon.

Then she showed a mini she made in Geri’s class using Sherri Lynn Wood’s book, The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters: A Guide to Creating, Quilting, and Living Courageously. She also made a baby quilt for a neighbor using mini charms.

Linda reminded everyone of the Quilters of South Carolina (http://www.quiltersofsc.org/)  Pieceable Retreat happening October 16 -18 at White Oak. She expressed an interest in hanging the CMQG’s Lowcountry quilt.  She reminded everyone of the Cobblestone show in March.  She said that the Beaufrot show adds ribbons denoting the modern quilts, so they stand out. While we decided we probably do not want to add blue ribbons, we do think that we should offer to help at the show.  Geri said we should look at the Asheville show and see how they showcase the modern quilts.

Debbie shard a set of fabric buckets with coasters and a scrap quilt she made.

Amy shared a mini made using Anna Maria Horner’s feather pattern and a work in progress of a Charleston map done Alabama Chanin Style.
